ALERT – Itch.io removes adult games from search

A little advice: Buy the game while it’s still available. There’s no telling how far this censorship will go

Tough news for indie creators: Itch.io has just dereferenced all adult games from its search engine and categories. That means: no more visibility, no more random discovery, and a huge blow for projects like mine.

If you were following an erotic/18+ game, make sure to bookmark its direct link or follow the creator on Patreon / Discord / personal website. Creators received no official warning, it was done overnight.

If you want to keep up with my game, here’s where to find me:  [ Patreon / Itch / Subscribestar ]

Of course you already know I am on your Patreon, but I am taking no chances on this.  I also have a link here so I do not need to search.

Below is link to another petition on change.org which I already signed. It is more likely to succeed than any other petition.

@DavyCroquette Hi, I have paid for the lifetime subscription (ultimate edition of this game, I think). I love it and have played it through numerous times. Im really concerned that with these new bans coming in and having made this purchase through Itch.io, will future updates still be made available? Or is there an expectation that the game will be removed, as some of the other games I've purchased have been getting removed? And if so, where would access to future updates be made available from?

For now, it seems that only games involving incest or rape are being completely removed from Itch. So I don't think my game will be taken down (fingers crossed — the wave of bans has already begun); it's just "invisible" at the moment.

Updates are still planned to be released here.
Alternatively, you can subscribe to get early access to the game — but it requires a monthly payment. It also helps support the development of the game on:

Thank you for the prompt reply and putting my fears to rest a bit. I hope as you do that this game remains on Itch.io in its current format.

If I had the option again, I would have signed up for the game on  Patreon or Subscribestar instead. However, as I've already purchased the lifetime subscription updates access on Itch.io, I am feeling fairly reluctant to pay for the game twice.

I understand. But the subscription gives access to the VIP code for additional content.

Corrupted Kingdom posted this petition to fight back

Since it's mostly the Search that has been disrupted on Itch, I collected all the links I had to pages that haven't been deleted, and save them to this collection: https://itch.io/c/6089350/find-all-the-avns-i-could-save-links-to

Save this link, share it, let me know if you have more. This will make sure people can still find our favorite stuff.

Thank you so much for this link <3 It's disgusting that ITCH.IO has just wiped and/or blocked hundreds of games and years' worth of work from their platform with zero notice! Im an adult, im happy to prove im an adult, im able to differentiate between what is reality and not and what is legal in the real world and not!! I don't need to be censored, and I don't need games that i enjoy taken away from me!! I won't be giving Itch.io another penny and am now switching to other platforms instead!

It's not really Itch's doing, and it's not about being an adult or not. They are under pressure from payment processors who have decided to start controlling censorship against pornographic material. This was because some bullshit conservative group in Australia got enough signatures to squeeze their balls. Steam and Itch caved to protect the rest of the creators.

But ultimately, whether it's Itch's doing or not. At the very least, reasonable notice should have been given, not a secret overnight cull!! I can still search adult content on Steam, I just made sure that my profile was set to Adult, and it's fine!! Why couldnt Itch do that also? Itch will now become a wasteland, now it's not selling adult content games.  I very much feel bad for the content creators most! The fact that some small feminist group with anti gay, LGBTQ+ and anti porn leanings has been allowed to have this much reach blows my mind tbh!

Well, for now, most of the content is there. And my list is growing as I find more of the links. Only the search has been affected. And the only content removed so far is stuff that lists incest or rape as a tag. Everything else is still there. Just spread my link around, and I'll keep adding stuff. I want every creator to still have a chance on Itch for as long as possible.

Concerning the removal of NSFW content from content creator platforms such as Itch.IO, Steam, and other platforms containing authors expressing themselves:

Capitulating to the credit card companies over sexual content is worse than banning books from a library for it's content. Fictional works are just that, fictional. Banning it's content base on someone else's conservative views is simply puritanical. It's an infringement on the rights of the authors to express themselves as individuals. In the U.S. it is an infringement of the 1st Amendment.

It would be ok to make safeguards that make security tight around the sales of such content, so that age verification, and rights waivers can be verified before payment is made, but outright banning the content is wrong. Shame on any platform that capitulates to the payment processors in this regard. Shame on the payment processors for capitulating to a single campaign of 70000 people who don't necessarily speak for the other 7 Billion people on the planet.
